*A variation of the water and fertilizer only method is to harvest when yellow or white/green weeds appear, water only when spiky brown weeds appear, and use both water and fertilizer if no weeds appear. You can get a few more full harvests this way.

*Barley growing can be macroed.

Cultivation
Plant a barley patch on grassy terrain. Barley patches have controls to add water, fertilizer, and weed killer, and meters indicating the current level of each.
* Water, fertilizer, and weed killer levels will all drop as time passes.
* When water and fertilizer are high, the barley will grow rapidly.
* When water OR fertilizer are low, the barley will die back.
* Weed killer has no effect on the pace of growth.

Barley may be harvested at any time (see Yield below).
* If the patch does not display as "Ready to Harvest", it will yield between 0 and 5 barley, depending on the presence of weeds and how much the barley has been allowed to grow.
* "Ready to Harvest" patches will yield 5 barley before any enhancement from other skills.
* In order for a barley patch to achieve "Ready to Harvest" status, it must have reached a certain level of growth and be entirely free of weeds.
NOTE: A barley patch which is "Ready for Harvest" will die 20 minutes later if left unharvested.

Weeds
As barley grows, it is subject to attack by three varieties of weed. These appear randomly and, when present, prevent a barley field from reaching maturity. More than one type of weed may be present simultaneously. A field with weeds can be harvested, but the barley yield is less than one without.

Weeds thrive and remain in a field until killed. Unlike flax weeds, barley weeds cannot simply be yanked out of the ground; they must be made to die off by manipulating the level of water, fertilizer, and weedkiller in the field.

* Weed #1 is thin and spiky. It thrives on fertilizer and is immune to weedkiller. To get rid of it, stop adding fertilizer. The weed will disappear when the fertilizer level gets low enough. Water and weedkiller neither help nor harm the weed.

* Weed #2 is yellow with small leaves. It thrives on water. To get rid of it, start adding weedkiller and stop adding water. The weed will disappear when water is low enough and weedkiller is high enough. The fertilizer level has no effect.

* Weed #3 is green with a white puffball on top. It thrives on fertilizer. To get rid of it, start adding weedkiller and stop adding fertilizer. The weed will vanish when fertilizer is low enough and weedkiller is high enough. The water level does not affect it.
Yield
The base yield of a barley bed is 5 for a fully-grown bed (i.e one that reads "Ready to harvest").

As per a change pushed on 2020/06/16, this is no longer increased by passing Worship tests, but rather by reaching the max level of the Ecology, Farming, Fungiculture and Horticulture skills.
Changed: barley yield can be improved by attaining a high skill level in other skills
Each of those skills reaching max level grants an additional +10 barley per bed, up to a maximum (as of 2020/06/16) of 45 per Ready to harvest bed.

Notes
If your goal is to grow a barley field to completion, you will devote a lot of time to fighting weeds. Occasionally a lucky field will make it to maturity without a single weed, but these are rare. More often you will have to watch your barley closely and manage the levels in order to keep your barley healthy, while cutting back on those ingredients that feed the weeds. A field may suffer multiple weed attacks before it reaches maturity. Patience and a good supply of weedkiller are required of the devoted barley farmer.

(Hekatef's Observation: Although we know how to treat weeds once they appear, there is no way to prevent them that I know of. Weed appearances seem to be entirely random, with no controllable factors making them more or less frequent. They will happily sprout up in a field already full of weedkiller. They do not seem to "spread", so having weeds in one field will not affect adjacent fields. I know of no ecological affects that influence the appearance of weeds. In other words, forget about trying to prevent weeds, and just deal with them as the inevitable random force they are. If anyone should discover a reliable method to prevent weeds, discussion is warmly encouraged!)

Harvesting Methods
Using Water, Fertilizer and Weed Killer
The Hekatef Method
I like to run 4 barley fields at a time—that's as many as I can fit on the screen simultaneously while still zoomed in enough to spot weeds. (It used to be 3 before I got a widescreen monitor.)

I start a field by adding 1 water and 1 fertilizer right away. At all times, for as long as there are no weeds to worry about, I keep a field at max water and fertilizer (or just a smidgen below max). This keeps the field progressing quickly toward "Ready to Harvest" status.

I keep a very close eye out for weeds and treat them as soon as they appear. I don't skimp on the weedkiller—if it's needed, then I keep weedkiller at max (or a smidgen below max) for as long as it takes for the weed(s) to die. I stop water and/or fertilizer, as needed, while keeping the other ingredient maxed out; that way the barley can stay as nourished as possible in the meantime. Sometimes a field is hit with multiple weeds simultaneously, and at these times there's nothing to do but max out weedkiller, withhold water and fertilizer, and wait—the barley will suffer a little, but once the weeds are gone you'll be able to make up for lost time.

All in all, at the end of a session of barley harvesting, I find I've used fertilizer and weedkiller in more or less equal amounts.

Stay observant! Sometimes weeds are very small and hard to see. Zoom in and move the camera a bit if you're not sure. Also, a weed infestation can consist of more than one plant: just because you see one weed fade away, it doesn't mean you've eradicated all of them. Don't start adding water/fertilizer again until you're positive the field is free of weeds that thrive on it.

Drowning Barley Method by Xaxyx
For those Egyptians who find weedkiller to be a bit difficult or costly to obtain in large quantities, I recommend the following method. It uses some fertilizer, very little weedkiller—and lots of water!

To start out, plant as many barley fields as you feel you can run comfortably. (I run four; ymmv.) Fill their water to maximum. Give them each a pulse of fertilizer.

Every tick, fill the water back to maximum. Growing near a water source helps so you don't have to run for more all the time. Keep water maxed at all times and in all circumstances; don't even think about it.

Add fertilizer only if it goes below half, and only if the bed is totally weed-free. Don't fill it up too high; just one pulse is plenty.

Weeds will invariably show up. Here's how you deal with them:

* Thorny: Stop adding fertilizer. Continue to keep water maximized. Eventually, the thorns will die.
* Green/white: Stop adding fertilizer. Continue to keep water maximized. Wait until fertilizer is low—25% or less—then fill the weedkiller. Keep weedkiller (and water!) near or at max until the weeds die.
* Yellow: Harvest and start the bed over. Don't hesitate to do this, even if the bed was almost full. It's much easier—and cheaper—to just plant a new bed.

Once you've killed off all of the thorny and green/white weeds, add some fertilizer—not too much, though, as before. Continue to keep the water at full.

Using this method, about half of your beds should max out, the ones you harvest early will often produce 3-5 barley, and you'll end up using very little weedkiller.

Using Water and Fertilizer
Plant the barley, immediately add 1 water and 1 fertilizer. Add 1 of each every other tick, and if weeds appear, immediately harvest the bed and plant a new one. While you won't get many grown to full harvest, this usually ends up netting about 4-5 barley per field.

*With weedkiller being pretty expensive for someone just starting out I use the following method with more full harvest yields per planting session...after planting add 1 weed killer with the 1 water and 1 fert. Add 1 water and 1 fert for every tick until weeds appear then harvest. (this way if you can only get your hands on a few toadskins you can still plant and harvest quite a bit of barley.)

Efficient Fertilizer Method
(Augma's method)
I wanted to make things as simple as possible for myself in the face of barley's randomness. Each time the water and fertilizer level moves down, I call this one "tick". I use about 100 fertilizer and harvest well over 100 barley (net) in about an hour. If you plant more than 1 barley at a time clearly you can make more efficient use of your time.

* 1) Plant the barley and add 1 water and 1 fertilizer.
* 2) For the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ticks:
** If there are weeds or weeds appear, only add 1 water.
** Otherwise, add 1 water and 1 fertilizer.
* 3) For the 4th tick, only add 1 water. (no fertilizer even if there aren't weeds)
* 4) For the 5th tick:
** If there are weeds, Harvest! (almost always the net barley harvested will equal or exceed the amount of fertilizer used)
** If there are no weeds, only add 1 water.
* 5) For the 6th tick:
** If there are weeds, Harvest!
** If you made it this far with no weeds, Congratulations!, Harvest your 10 barley!

DO NOT harvest as soon as you see a weed and try not to get frustrated if you see more weeds appear as you continue. Wait until the 5th tick! The yield will almost always be better if you wait. If the only weed you have is the spindly brown kind, you can make a judgment call whether to continue growing (and just adding water) rather than harvesting prematurely. Very rarely those weeds go away and the barley grows to a complete harvest.

Using Water Only
It is possible to raise barley (albeit slowly) with no fertilizer or weedkiller. Simply plant the barley field, water it to the max level, and keep it fully watered. Ignore any weeds that appear. When you see the number of stalks increase, harvest. You should end up with 2 barley per field (net gain of 1 raw barley) if there are weeds, or 3 barley if weed-free.

I would like to add that when a new stalk appears, water once more, then harvest on the next water drop, This gives the new stalk a chance to grow. I harvested as soon as a new stalk appeared and only got back 1 barley, so there seems to be a small time requirement for growth. Despite weeds you will get 2 barley. (Euripedus)

Bobophet's Barley
This method yields about 85% to 95% completed fields, at 10 barley per field (or more after maxing certain skills). You do not need to watch for weeds on most fields, if at all. It uses Weed Killer and Grain Fertilizer, but the expense is definitely worth it if you are growing in bulk.

This info is confirmed for T6. Most fields will be ready to harvest in 5–7 minutes. Some stragglers may take 10 minutes or longer.

* 1. Plant a field of barley. Max out the Water, Grain Fertilizer and Weed Killer bars. Pin the window.
* 2. Repeat Step 1 until you have 8 fields. I create a 2x4 set of fields.
* 3. Wait two ticks, then add a pulse each of Water and Weed Killer to max these out again. Do this for each field.
* 4. Wait for all bars to sink again for two ticks. When Water and Weed Killer reach the half-full point, give them another pulse to max them out; when Grain Fertilizer gets close to empty, give it a pulse to bring it back to half-full. Refer to the screenshot below. Do this for every field.
* 5. Repeat step 4 until each field gives the Ready to Harvest message. Harvest as soon as you can.
* 6. It often happens that one or two fields will take far longer to harvest than the others. You can watch weeds on these if you like, and use the methods described above to bring these fields to completion faster. Or, you can harvest as-is for less gains. Even slow fields will eventually come around to completion by using the method I'm describing, however, assuming you're willing to wait and spend the mats.

Running eight fields requires lots of clicking. Some people here may have the skill to run more, and some less, but eight is comfortable for me. Plant fast; max out those bars fast; pin the windows fast...then you can relax and do steps 3-5 above at a slightly easier pace.

You may want to start with four fields at first to get the timing down, then gradually ramp up to a comfortable number of fields. --Bobophet

* 2) For the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ticks:
** If there are weeds or weeds appear, only add 1 water.
** Otherwise, add 1 water and 1 fertilizer.
* 3) For the 4th tick, only add 1 water. (no fertilizer even if there aren't weeds)
* 4) For the 5th tick:
** If there are weeds, Harvest! (almost always the net barley harvested will equal or exceed the amount of fertilizer used)
** If there are no weeds, only add 1 water.
* 5) For the 6th tick:

* 2. Repeat Step 1 until you have 8 fields. I create a 2x4 set of fields.

--Bobophet
Overview
Research is a decentralized process. Each house completes basic resource requirements at the University to Champion a Technology. Each house may only Champion one Technology at a time. This is not a competition; once a technology is Championed, it will become open to all of Egypt once completed.

Once a Technology is Championed, work begins at Laboratories built by players all across Egypt. Each Laboratory works independently on all of the currently Championed Technologies.

Each Technology will have an amount of time necessary for a Laboratory to finish the Research, and a specific number of Laboratories required to complete the Research and unlock the Technology. This number of Laboratories scales with the number of researches completed.

The In Game Calendar will show the number of Laboratories which are necessary, as well as the number which have already finished their research.

All Laboratories across Egypt contribute to all Technologies, regardless of House which Championed the Technology. Once the required number of Laboratories completes the research, the tech is unlocked, and all work on excess Laboratories is wasted. At any time, a Laboratory may become "Blocked", and the Laboratory will request additional resources to be added to this Laboratory for it to continue it's research. This Laboratory timer is paused, but does not have any affect on other Laboratories.

Scrolls of Wisdom are used to reduce the research requirements of future technologies.

Use
Each House can choose to champion one technology at a time, and once a technology has been championed it's locked in place till all research has been completed. This requires interaction with Laboratories.
Test Description
In the Test of the Singing Cicada, you'll be honing your skills by quickly finding an ever-changing collection of Singing Cicadas hidden in cages across the land. Score points each time you find a Cicada cage, and automatically spend them when you advance to gain Talent Points by having the highest score in Egypt. When you find enough Cicadas, place a cage of your own for an effortless and continuous stream of points.

Task
Test of the Singing Cicada (task)

Additional Information
The Test of the Singing Cicada is a test in the discipline of the Human Body. The test focuses on exploration, particularly of remote or hard-to-reach areas in Egypt.

You must go to a University of Body and hand over a certain amount of cicadas you have found for the scientists to give you a cage to build. Usually it takes 4 - 9 cicadas to do this. All Universities of Body can give you a cage, regardless of what faction they are supporting.

You cannot carry more than 21 cicadas on yourself. If you do carry 21 of them, you will be told you have to go to a university of Body to fashion a cage.

A cage costs 1 Linen and 4 Boards to build. You cannot build near steep terrain.

You have the above options for cages. Sometimes two or more cages are built on top of each other so it is good policy to "Move the Nearby Cage." under Self -> Tests -> Test of the Singing Cicada.

Finding Cages
At the start of tale, there are seed cages placed by The Stranger.

Cages can be found in every region but you cannot place a cage in an area controlled by your faction.

:: "You cannot place a cage in land we (Your Faction) control, they are really noisy, let someone else put up with them..."

Generally this is presumed to be the areas of the 3 Kingdoms. It is unknown what happens when factions and regions change loyalty through Tribute offerings.

Passing the Principle
Hidden across the Egyptian landscape are dozens of Cicada Cages, detectable mainly through the continuous chirping sounds they emit. A player who comes across a cicada cage is allowed to take a cicada from it (provided the player has signed up for the Cicada test). When a player has collected enough cicadas, he may build and place a cicada cage of his own. In T8, a cage may be placed only in a region belonging to factions other than the one a player is a part of. Cages crumble and are gone after 7 players have discovered them and removed a cicada.

Cicada points are earned both by finding other players' cages (a single bonus for each cage found) and by building your own (points earned continuously for as long as your cages survive). Every 3 Egypt days, the 21 players with the highest scores receive a Talent Point. They then all lose cicada points equal to the 21st player's score. (In effect, the 21st player's score determines how much it "costs" to "buy" a Talent Point that day.) Players complete the test when they have received 7 Talent Points.

NOTE: Talent points replaced speed points.

Silenced Cicada Chirps
Part way through Tale 8 a method of silencing the continuous cicada chirp was introduced as part of the T8 Cheese System. Baramily cheese when applied to a cicada cage silences the chirp.

There are a number of unknowns about the effects of giving cheese to insects.

#Duration of the silence
#Application to your own cages
#Application to another player's cages
#How the age (potency) of the cheese affects the silence
#Any negative effects from applying the cheese to the cage
#Offsets to the increased difficulty in finding silenced cages

Talent Points
Talent Points are allocated depending on the number of advances you achieve. Confirmation of how many points you receive and when goes here

It is possible to receive more than one advance in a day.
* For example, if you have 15,000 points and the advances cost 5,000 points then you will gain three advances.
* For example, if you have 460,000 points and the advances cost 20,800 points each, then you will gain 22 advances (457,600 points) and keep 2,400 points for the next round of advancements. It is verified that you can get more than 21 advances in a single go. However, you will not get any more than 7 Talent Points.

Accessibility
If you have a hearing impairment that causes you problems with detecting and triangulating the cicadas, the following software may help you:
The Stranger's University of Progress is located in three remote locations and allows the citizenry of Egypt to demonstrate Tests to be opened. Take care, though, as the Stranger is wily and not to be trusted. (Choose wisely when you decide to demonstrate a test.) Note: This refers only to the 7-day timer between test unlocks, and *not* to any limits on the number of Tests that can be opened in total.

To demonstrate tests, one must meet the level and materiel demonstration requirements. Each location has a seven-day timer once a test is unlocked.

This is also the place where one can request to participate in the Ultimate Challenges.

Gravel-making improvement.

We, Citizens of Egypt, think our current way of making gravel is tedious and inefficient, be it through the use of a sledgehammer or explosives.

Thus, we turn ourselves to our researchers and suggest they come up with a new technology, Stone Crushing, that would allow us to build and operate a Stone Crusher.

This building would be composed of (with suggested materials):
*a solid base for stability (concrete and cut stones),
*a very sturdy hopper made of an enduring metal or alloy (sheetings, bars, bolts and straps),
*a towering structure above the hopper to hold the crusher itself (bars, boards, bolts)
*a crusher, basically a sturdy, metallic container (sheetings, straps), filled with heavy filling (cut stone or lead)
*a lifting mechanism of pulleys and wires/cables to lift the crusher, lock it in place and release it down for crushing (pulleys, wires/cables and gears),
Upgrades :
*hopper size, to crush more stones at once,
*tower size, to crush stones more efficiently,
*one or more gearbox to ease the lifting,
The suggested operation would be to :
*Lift the crusher to a certain height, based on Strength (lifting distance) and Endurance (lifting frequency), the lifting mechanism taking care of not letting the crusher fall,
*Empty the hopper of all but one type of stone and/or add more stones. The crusher must be at a minimum height for this.
*Release the crusher, smashing the stones and producing smaller stones and gravel, in a similar way to hammering stones.
**Note: If the stones are mixed, only one type of stone, the biggest available, will be crushed. If the crusher was high enough and crushes all of the biggest stones, possibly start crushing the next available size
*Repeat.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A few explanations :

"Why ?" may you be asking.
Well, because running after rolling stones stops being fun past the first minute, and stones in various state of demolition should not be rolling so far, so easily.
Also, explosives are time-consuming and a really strange idea to make gravel, and dangerous too.

The building is intended to be moderately difficult to attain, and upgradable; its operation, derived from aqueduct pumping and flax processing, benefits both from eliminating all the running around, but mainly from introducing food boosting to improve the process itself.
