-Common fish seem to be location and rod dependent.  That is, if you find a spot where you catch 100% catfish, you will always catch catfish as your common fish there when using that rod.  Upgrading to a higher level rod may change the common fish you catch there.  For instance, I have a 100% catfish spot with a simple fly rod that turns into a >80% perch spot with a beachcomber rod.  My speculation is that there are 'bands', somehow, running through Egypt.  If you're right on top of a catfish band, that's what you're going to catch there.  You can also be on a spot that has multiple bands, resulting in more than one type of common fish.
