Basic

  • Vegetables refer to the various edible plants which can be grown and harvested from seeds.
  • Most vegetables can be grilled in a Firepit or cooked in a Kitchen; most have other uses as well.
  • Egypt has access to five standard vegetables -- Cabbage, Carrots, Garlic, Leeks, and Onions—the seeds of which are available to paid accounts from Universities of Worship where the Agriculture tech is open, and your Faction is in control of the UWor.
  • Beginning with T7, when you request vegetables from the UWor, you will be given a total of 6 seeds from 2 strains of the same vegetable. The mix could be 1/5, 2/4 or 3/3.
  • Other vegetables such as Peppers, Cucumbers, Watermelon and Eggplant *may* be received from events.

How To Grow

All vegetables are grown from Vegetable Seeds. Vegetables can only be planted in the proper terrain:

All five standard vegetables are grown in the same way. Planting a seed produces a tiny vegetable; this must be watered from a jug quickly or it will die back into a seed. A vegetable that has been watered will soon grow to the next larger size, at which time it should be watered again or it will shrink. When a vegetable reaches maximum size, it may be harvested. Original vegetable seeds must grow four times before they can be harvested, which means at least four waterings (more if they shrink on the way). Crossbred seeds vary on waterings. To sum up: Water upon planting (the required # of times), then repeat each time the vegetable changes size. Overwatering (watering more than the vegetable strain requires) will result in it shrinking/dying and eventually reverting to seed (except Peppers, pre-T8).

The steps for reproducing an onion seed have not been confirmed at this time. In an effort to expedite the discovery of onion seed reproduction, please edit this section with any information if you are able to do so.

Important things to note: Type of land you were on or near, coordinates, time of day, other factors (near certain types of trees, etc.).

Confirmed seed reproduction:

  • Onion and Garlic seeds have both been reproduced when planted near a Carrion Eater spawn at 2-4pm game time at different locations on different days. The actual cause of duplication is still in question but points toward ground pollution and other factors.
 (tried to reproduce Onion and Garlic Seeds near Carrion at different locations and times, no success. Perhaps every Character hat a specific Mushroom to produce seeds. I continue trying planting near different mushrooms. Thutamun)

Got Onion-Seeds around Suez Tribut Post and north and south of the tribut post, only a few plant each spot, you need to move around, from 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM but time start and ends diffrent too but in this window Qwu


Myths busted:

  • "A 'wave' runs through Egypt from "X to Y" at a certain time of day" - Malard disproved (citation needed)

Pollution

An unknown number of factors can cause seeds to fail to grow. The original seed is returned.

  • Tested the area for Heavy Metal using Ecology 1 and 2,000 tadpole returned no results

Watermelons are, in game terms, a kind of vegetable. In T8 these were found by finding ducks, mallards or other waterfowl during the Day of the Duck event (Mar 21-22, 2018).

Side note: you can only get one seed from your first duck/pigeon/seagull. Subsequent fowl won't let you feed them.

  • Eggplants grow on Sand
  • Eggplant seeds can be reproduced if planted next to a mushroom.
    Warning were issued that the over production of eggplant/eggplant seeds would have consequences.
    This warning seems to be connected to higher pollution levels found after growing eggplant seeds.

General Observations

Ecology

In T7 Morendo verified (using Ecology 3) that growing vegetables affects the ground water level. This can reduce your ground water level to the point that neither vegetables nor flax will grow. Ground water depletion affects a larger area (need data here) around where you were growing your vegetables. To avoid groundwater depletion, you should rotate your vegetable growing to sites that are far enough apart (need data here) that they don't contribute to further depletion in areas that need to recover. Given sufficient time (need data here), the groundwater appears to move back towards normal levels (100).

Previous Reproduction

T8 reproduction methods are currently being investigated. Preliminary data suggests that reproduction is driven primarily by ecological and time-of-day factors.

Lens of Thoth is actively researching vegetable reproduction. Keep an eye on their Lens of Thoth/Vegetable Seeds page for relevant data. (If you are skilled up in Ecology, and wish to contribute to this research, the guild-hall is in Red Sea, 1996, 1824, not far from the Avaris chariot stop. All factions are welcome.)
