A springbox can be fitted to some machines to increase their operating speed. This performance improvement may be applied regardless of whether the machine has been tuned. Assembling and installing Springboxes, as well as checking a building's specific Springbox requirement, may only be done by one who knows Advanced Automation.
The quality of the spring used will affect the performance improvement. Higher quality is better. Quality of 8500 appears to increase rate by 2.5x. Quality of around 7500 appears to increase rate by 2x. It is possible this may vary from machine to machine - if you have the time, please confirm with your own data!
Springbox-upgraded machines may function in slightly unusual ways. My Flax Gin fitted with a springbox now processed flax in multiples of 4 only - when the hopper is loaded with 600 Rotten Flax, only 596 will be processed before the machine halts.
Springboxes are made from 1 Spring, 1 Cotter Pin and a random three-output Gearbox.
The gearbox required may be determined by using the Check Spring Box requirement option of the Utility submenu of the machine.
Note: Removing a Spring Box from a building (to change to a higher quality Spring Box, for example) changes the Gear Box requirement.
