Leveling and number of fish caught
Fly Fishing is a multi-level skill taught at the School of Body. Only Level 1 can be acquired from school. All other levels will go up as you do LOTS of fishing, the actual number is different for different players (for example, in a previous tale, to Level 5 took Porthos 12,903 fish, but for Silden only needed 7,131). Maximum level is not known, Porthos has so far managed to reach level 9 (which took 54,173 fish caught to achieve). Eugenius observed that if a player has unusually high fish caught for a Fly Fishing level, it is due to the requisite number of types of fish has not been achieved.
You level up by catching whole fish, and only caught fish counts as progress, not failed casts. (T10 : in the Skills panel, leave the mouse pointer over the Fly Fishing icon to see the total number of fish caught.
Confirmed the number of fish caught that contributes to Fly Fishing leveling is the number of TIMES you have caught fish, not the db of fish, nor the count of common fish caught each time.

Per experience, it seems to now have more to do with types of fish caught or location. I hit lvl 2 at 2800, lvl 3 at 7900, lvl 4 at 26,000... from fishing only at my campsite.. i then proceeded to catch 103,000 fish at my campsite trying to hit 5... no results. I asked in Egypt! channel about it, and was told you have to 'move around'... i crossed half the map catching nothing but the same common fish... Once i caught the first new named fish, a 'Giant Crayfish'... boom... lvl 5 immediately... After 76,000 fish caught without leveling.
Uses
Allows you to build a Simple Fly Rod. You will also receive one free rod upon learning the skill from the school.
If a fishing pole is in your inventory a new action icon will appear when near bodies of water.
In order to fish, you need Fishing Lures, which are made on a Crafting Bench with Insects using the Fly Tying skill.
Fishing Results
Once you have a lure on your rod, and you cast, the messages you can get are:
- No fish bit. Try different lures and locations.
- You didn't catch anything. Try different lures and locations.
- You almost caught an odd fish, but you were too late recognizing the bite.
- You almost caught an unusual fish, but you were not quick enough.
- You almost caught a strange fish, but this rod was just too clumsy.
- Caught a (qty) deben (fish type)
There is also a random chance you will be told "You also lost your lure.". If you catch a fish, it will NOT necessarily cost a lure.
