Prior to Tale 9 gearboxes only used gears of two metals, Brass and Iron.
- Small Gears were made from Brass
- Medium and Large Gears were made from Iron
As of Tale 9, gearboxes use gears of many different metals dependent on the gear ration. Lets look at an example gearbox:
This gearbox would be called "D463" for its output column and ration. It uses the gear chain of (5/3) * (5/3) * (5/3).
- Shaft 1A has a 5 tooth gear
- Shaft 2B has a 3 tooth gear on layer 1, and a 5 tooth gear on layer 2
- Shaft 3C has a Spacer on layer 1, a 3 tooth on layer 2, and 5 tooth on layer 3
- Shaft 4D has a 3 tooth on layer 1, a spacer on layer 2, and 3 tooth on layer 3
- Shafts 5D,6D,7D,8D have 3 tooth gears on layer 1
As you can see, we are using the same 5/3 gear combination three times. When you go to build the box you will be asked for:
If we reference the Gear Ratios page we see:
- 167 - (5/3) - Iron
- 278 - (5/3) * (5/3) - Tin
- 463 - (5/3) * (5/3) * (5/3) - Brass
As you can see, while we are using the same combination, each increase in the ration changes the metal needed.
- With the first use, we are asked for 1 Medium and 1 Small Iron gear
- With the second use, we are asked for 1 Medium and 1 Small Tin gear
- With the third use, and the rest of the chain, we are asked for 1 Aluminium and 6 Brass Gears
Tip: While you can figure out all the gears you need and make them for each box you make, if you plan to make many gearboxes, it is best to make a stockpile of gears of all types ahead of time
