{{=}} inserts an equals sign (=). This template is useful when the text of a template argument's value must include an equals sign, since MediaWiki defaults to interpreting the symbol as a value assignment operator. (In other words, if a template breaks and the text being displayed contains = anywhere in it, use {{=}} instead.)
