Automation uses Candles and Ropes to make timers to schedule operations ("Schedule" menu appears after refreshing kettle window after selecting the Beer button but before starting). Each level allows additional operations to be scheduled. Future levels of this skill - or another like it - will allow for the automatic closing of the lid, as well.
