Morendo's Potash Theory:

Each time salt is created there is a random chance for potash to be created as well. I have 6 tubs, all with the same salt water added at the same times and their contents vary from 5 salt 5 potash to 5 salt 2 potash.

My observations are that there's a 1 in 3 chance for potash to be deposited when salt is produced. Moreover, it also appears that there's a seed generated when the tub is created that affects the randomness, i.e. one tub my create a potash nearly every time salt is produced, while another may only produce 1 potash for every 3 salt.
