Types of Fish

There seem to be 3 or 4 types of fish, depending on how you categorize them. Common fish include: Catfish, Carp, Chromis, Tilapia. Uncommon fish include Phagrus and Oxyrynchus. Then, there are either special fish and odd fish, or both together make up seasonal fish, which is everything else. For purposes of this page, we're grouping special and odd fish together as seasonal fish.

Common Fish

Common fish seem to be location and rod dependent. Lure does not matter. That is, if you find a spot where you catch 100% catfish, you will always catch catfish as your common fish there when using that rod. Upgrading to a higher level rod may change the common fish you catch there. For instance, I have a 100% catfish spot with a simple fly rod that turns into a >80% perch spot with a beachcomber rod. My speculation is that there are 'bands', somehow, running through Egypt. If you're right on top of a catfish band, that's what you're going to catch there. You can also be on a spot that has multiple bands, resulting in more than one type of common fish.

Uncommon Fish

Uncommon fish seem to be located in places where multiple, specific bands of common fish occur. For instance, phagrus seems to be catchable in locations with a carp and a chromis band (hat tip to Lukeera for discovering this). Oxyrynchus seems to show up with a perch band overlapping a carp band.

Seasonal Fish

Seasonal fish do not seem to care about location. Things that do affect seasonal fish catches and sizes are time of in game day, fishing lure, speed stat, and fishing rod. You will notice that you'll catch a large seasonal fish on a lure, and if you keep fishing with that lure, the size will decrement down all the way to not catching any more. At this point, you won't catch more of that fish in this spot for a while. A faster speed will result in larger catches of seasonal fish. Eating grilled cabbage for the +2 speed is an easy way to increase seasonal fish sizes.

Fishing Junk

Fishing junk will be caught less and less as you upgrade rods and upgrade speed. My speculation is that if you fail to catch a seasonal fish, and then fail to catch a common or uncommon fish, then you have a chance at fishing junk. So anything that lowers your chance at catching a fish increases your chance of fishing junk, and visa versa. So if you're fishing for rotten flax, stick to a simple fly rod and as low a speed as possible.

Fish Roe

One seasonal fish per month will be the roe fish. Fish of this species larger than 10db have a chance to give roe when filleted. The amount of oil received when filleting decreases VERY quickly, so I suggest filleting them within ten minutes if you want to maximize roe.

Specific Seasonal Fish Observations

Yellowfin Snapper are usually caught in the morning on Feather Midge, Blister Beetle, Horned Hookworm.
Serpentfish can be caught in the morning on Camel Weevel
Tilefish are usually caught in the morning on Ash Centipede, feather midge
Otterfish are usually caught in the morning and early afternoon on Ash Centipede, clearwing, bristleworm, ruby hornborer, and fruit maggot.
